In 1988, Contec was established to provide the expertise necessary to meet these critical cleaning needs. Ever since, we’ve been leading the way in cleaning innovation.

Today, Contec is the leading manufacturer of and partner for contamination control products in mission-critical cleaning environments around the world. Our work has significant impact when and where “clean” counts most.

OUR HISTORY

CONTEC ESTABLISHED

Contec, Inc. was founded in Spartanburg, South Carolina in1988 by Jack McBride and Jim Smith as a distribution company focusing on the needs of the cleanroom manufacturing industry. The customer base included the following type of customers: semiconductor, microelectronics, medical device, magnetic media, compact disc, optics, and pharmaceutical.

TRANSITION TO MANUFACTURING

In 1990, the company entered the business of manufacturing fabric wipers for the cleanroom industry. This transition to manufacturing of the products laid the foundation for the specialty products Contec is known for today.

DEVELOPMENT OF PRESTAURATED WIPES

Contec paved a new way of business through its development of presaturated wipes. While this is a relatively common concept (think baby wipes), it had not yet been applied to the industrial wipe market. Contec developed its first presaturated product, PROSAT® wipes in the early 1990’s and slowly established a business around this flagship product

ENTRY INTO AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

In 1994 the presaturated wipes were introduced to the automotive industry for use in wiping cars before painting. The product was a gamechanger for the industry as it enabled the companies to reduce usage of hazardous solvents, improve safety for their workers, and greatly improve the quality of the finished paint job.

LOCUST GROVE FACILITY ESTABLISHED

Contec opens Locust Grove, its first fully-designed manufacturing facility, to support the growth of the company and bring more manufacturing capabilities in-house.

AQUISITION IN TOLEDO

While Contec continued to grow its manufacturing capabilities at the Spartanburg, SC based Locust Grove facility, we also moved forward with the acquisition of Toledo, Ohio-based Thunderbolt® products, our largest distributor in the automotive market. Contec maintains a facility in Toledo today.

MOVING INTO CHINA

Contec extends its reach and opens its manufacturing plant in Suzhou, China to support the growing industries in the Asia-Pacific markets. Contec maintains a dedicated team in Asia today with manufacturing in Suzhou and team members spread throughout the region.

VANNES FACILITY ESTABLISHED

To support the growing Cleanroom business in Europe, Contec establishes a facility in Vannes, France, which continues to operate today.

Contec achieves ISO 9001:2008 quality management certification.

Avi Lawrence is named President of Contec, inc. Avi continues to serve in this role today.

Contec opens its Ashington, United Kingdom facility to manufacture sterile disinfectants for the growing European Cleanroom market.

WINGO PARK FACILITY ESTABLISHED

Contec expands in Spartanburg, adding a second location, Wingo Park. Today, Wingo Park houses many of the company’s business offices, corporate functions, and some manufacturing facilities.

Contec moves South Carolina distribution to the Flatwood Facility in Chesnee, SC to support the growing needs of our customers. Our Flatwood facility still serves as our primary warehousing and distribution site.

GROWTH AND EXPANSION IN ASIA PACIFIC

Contec expands its presence in the Asia Pacific region through its opening of a manufacturing plant in the Special Economic Zone of Laguna in the Philippines. This 50,000 square foot facility takes Contec's global associate count to more than 1,100.

Health and Wellness Plans

Health and Wellness Plans

Contec offers an array of affordable benefits for you and your family, including: medical (PPO), including infertility benefits, dental, vision, Rx coverage, short term disability, long term disability, and life insurance. Full-time associates are eligible the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. 

We also offer two types of Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) fundable with pre-tax dollars: a Healthcare Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA), and a Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (DCFSA). Accounts are funded via a payroll deduction each pay period. Money that you contribute to your FSA’s is not subject to social security taxes, federal, and, in most cases, state income taxes. 

Paid Time Off

Contec offers a bank of PTO, based upon your employment classification, that associates are allowed to use according to their specific needs: illness, vacation, or personal needs.  Beginning the first full calendar year of employment, you are granted 17 days or 136 hours of PTO. Unused PTO will rollover into the next year, up to a designated maximum amount. 

We also provide 9 paid holidays and 1 floating holiday; the holidays observed each calendar year are: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

401K Savings and Profit Sharing Plan

Contec offers a convenient way to save for your future through payroll deductions. Associates eligible to participate in the plan, (18 years of age or older and have completed 30 days of continuous employment), are automatically enrolled on the first of the month following 30 days at a 5% deferral rate.  Associates are given the option then to opt-out of the plan, defer at a different percentage, or choose other investment funds.  

A safe-harbor match is made by Contec for up to the first 3% deferred, and then another match is made for 50% of the next 2% deferred.  This safe harbor match is fully vested day 1 of eligibility. 

Rollovers from other qualified plans and catch-up contributions for participants over 50 years of age are also allowed. 

Onsite Amenities

For the convenience of our associates and their spouses, Contec offers an onsite health clinic for those enrolled in our medical plan that provides acute care, health screenings, disease management, and physician referrals.  

In support of every associate’s health and wellbeing, onsite gyms are available at two of our facilities for our associates; one even including a Pickleball Court.

Family Planning and Parental Leave

Family Planning and Parental Leave

Contec realizes that families are formed in many different ways.  Therefore, we offer an Adoption Assistance Program to help offset the costs associates incur with adopting a child. This program provides up to $10,000 per child with a lifetime maximum of $20,000. Contec also offers Infertility Treatment coverage through our medical PPO plan with a lifetime max of $10,000. 

In addition, Contec recognizes the importance of the bonds that form between parents and their children, whether after the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child.  To assist with that, we are proud to offer all full-time associates with at least 12 months of service Paid Parental Leave (PPL). Associates are eligible to receive a maximum of 12 weeks of PPL in a rolling 12 month period. 

Tuition Reimbursement

Contec’s Educational Expense Reimbursement Program is designed to help associates further their knowledge, skills, and job effectiveness through higher education in fields of interest to the company. This financial support is provided to eligible associates enrolling in college, university, and technical school courses to obtain an Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or technical degree. 

Qualifying associates may be reimbursed up to 50% of the tuition cost and 100% of the cost of books and lab fees upon satisfactory completion of the course. Individual courses that are part of a degree, licensing, or certification program related to the associate’s current job duties or future positions are also eligible for educational assistance.

Contec considers hybrid work options to be a viable work arrangement in instances where job duties can be accomplished remotely, business needs are met, and when the individual, job, and supervisor characteristics are best suited for such arrangement.
